This book is a must read: I cannot recommend this book highly enough for anyone who wants to visit the Republic of Georgia. I bought the book to provide some context during my trip, and it was perfect. Every time I saw something interesting, I could refer to the book for the context and depth which makes an experience even more special.Although the first half is set in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the author combines an interesting personal travel and cultural journey with well-timed explanations of the historical and cultural backstories of each area. In 2018, as I visited Tbilisi, Uplistsikhe and Gori, Gudauri and Pasanauri, Svenali and Ushguli, and Telavi and Sighnaghi in Kakheti -- I found his every experience still relevant.
